A sign posted on the front door of the bowling alley where Robert Card allegedly killed 7 people says the establishment is a gun-free zone.
Bowling Alley Was a Gun-Free Zone
The bowling alley in which Robert Card allegedly shot and killed seven people displays a sign on its front door declaring the establishment to be gun-free, now known as Just-in-Time Bowling Alley.
‘Keep Our Atmosphere Family Friendly’
The sign reads, “We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing firearms in this building and we would appreciate it if you left them in your vehicle. Please keep our atmosphere family friendly.”
Seven People Lost Their Lives There
Card stands accused of fatally shooting one woman and six men within the confines of this gun-free bowling alley.
Gun-Free Zones Are an Easy Target
Statistics from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) reveal that approximately only 6% of mass public shootings take place in areas where firearms are allowed.
96% Of Mass Shootings Are in Gun-Free Zones
In July 2022, during Congressional testimony, Antonia Okafor of Gun Owners of America (GOA) stated that “94 percent of mass shootings occur in gun-free zones.”
The Statement Was Fact Checked
A fact-check by Breitbart News verified this statement, defining “gun-free zones” as places where general citizens are not allowed to carry firearms.
Maine’s Gun Laws
Maine operates as a shall-issue, permitless carry state, where the Department of Public Safety, specifically the Maine State Police, issues concealed weapons permits.
No Background Checks
Notably, private handgun sales in Maine do not necessitate permits, background checks, or firearm registration.
Maine Allows Both Open and Concealed Carry Without a License
Maine law permits both open and concealed carry without a license, applicable to individuals aged 21 or older or those at least 18 years old who are actively serving or have been honorably discharged from the military, provided they can legally possess a firearm.
No Permit Required
No permit, background check, or firearms registration is required for purchasing a handgun from a private individual in the state.
Where Aren’t Guns Allowed
State law prohibits civilians from carrying firearms in K-12 schools, colleges, and government buildings, including courthouses, and during public demonstrations.
Guns Are Allowed in Hospitals and Churches
Conversely, hospitals, places of worship, and gambling establishments are not subject to these restrictions.
Private Businesses Can Ban Them
Employers maintain the authority to forbid firearms within their premises.
People Can Keep Guns in Their Cars
However, they cannot restrict individuals from storing firearms in their vehicles within company parking lots.
Cannot Have Guns Where Alcohol Is Served
Bars and restaurants that serve alcohol are required by law to display appropriate signage indicating that firearms are prohibited on their premises in order for the prohibition to be legally enforceable.
